570 News Staff Bios570 News Staff Bios DON KOLLINS Program Director Don and his family moved to Kitchener in April 2005 to take the reigns as Program Director of 570 News. He is responsible for the day to day operation of the radio station. Don has been in the radio business for 20 years and has worked in several markets in western Canada as well as Ottawa, Ontario - both on the air and in management roles. His family originates from Saskatchewan. Don was host of his own Morning Talk show in Regina, Saskatchewan for 6 years and part of the team that designed and implemented the News/Talk format in the province before moving to Kitchener with 570 NEWS. Don's family consists of Janelle and daughters, Dana, Ashley, Taylor, Alyssa, Max the dog, Angel and Oreo, the cats and fish that don't have names. To email Don, click here; don.kollins@570news.rogers.com JOE PAVIA News Director Joe’s first gig in news radio was working election night, the night Brian Mulroney and the Conservative government came to power in Canada. He has been with 570 NEWS since 1995 and has worked in a number of Ontario markets including as an anchor and reporter in Toronto, Guelph and Orangeville and now Waterloo Region. Joe is heard on both 570 NEWS and our sister station CHYM where he reads morning news on the George and Tara show. Joe was part of the news team when it won RTNDA Murrow Award for the coverage of the big black out of 2003. He is especially proud winning the 2007 Edward R. Murrow Award for "Best Newscast". His passion for news began at a young age and he continues to share that passion with his staff during daily discussion of news and issues before stories make it to air. Joe and his wife think Waterloo Region is a great place to raise children. They have two teenagers. PAUL MCPHEE Morning News Editor Paul has been with 570 NEWS since early 2004 and has worked in radio for over 20 years. He's worked in various capacities, all news related and all seemingly preparing him for his arrival in K-W. The news intensive format is a perfect fit and while it's very busy at times, it is never boring. Working with fellow news junkies makes Paul feel right at home. Radio stops along the way included Leamington, Welland, Chatham, Brantford and finally Waterloo Region. Paul, who says this is his LAST stop on the radio trail, is married and has a son. They live in Waterloo and love the community. It offers so many great opportunities. Paul loves the outdoors and with no shortage of trails - perfect for going "exploring", community events and recreation opportunities, there is always something to do. Paul and his family also enjoy the multi-cultural make up of the area: a snapshot of what Canada is all about and a perfect opportunity to teach their son about tolerance and the richness that surrounds us. GLENN PELLETIER Morning News Anchor Glenn Pelletier was born in Calgary, Alberta, but grew up in Scarborough, and graduated from Ryerson University in 1981. He has been with 570 NEWS since 1981. He is a former television reporter at CKCO Television and has worked in radio news in Winnipeg, Barrie and in Toronto. He also spent a season working as a member of the Blue Jays broadcast team with Tom Cheek and Jerry Howarth in 1999. Glenn has two daughters - Lucy and Ellen . LISA DREW Morning News Anchor Lisa started her career at 570 NEWS back in 1990 as a reporter and news anchor. She also spent many years as a traffic reporter on 570 and sister station CHYM FM. Lisa shares an Edward R. Murrow award for Best Newscast with the 570 News team. She has been honoured by the Ontario Provincial Police for her five-part series on Domestic Violence. "Behind Closed Doors" is now used for training with police. The series also won an RTNDA award "The Dave Rogers Award". The former army brat is proud to call Waterloo region home after many years on the move. Lisa is married and has two boys. Interests include chasing kids to hockey and soccer games, reading, gardening... and (ongoing!) home renovations. TERESA CHIAVAROLI Weekend Anchor Teresa was born in Peterborough, Ontario and graduated from the University of Toronto and Humber College. She joined 570 News in 2006. During her time with CKGL she has been a traffic reporter, news editor, arts and entertainment reporter and news anchor. Teresa continues to cover local theatre and co-anchors the weekend news. When she isn’t at work she’s usually planning her next adventure. Having travelled throughout Europe and North America she’s always happy to hop on a plane. Teresa is proud to be apart of the 570 News team and while her bedtime is earlier than a 5-year-old…she’s getting used to it. Mark Douglas Morning Reporter When Mark has moved up the radio dial from 560 CFOS AM in Owen Sound where he was the afternoon news anchor to 570 News where he is the morning news reporter. He and his fiancee moved to their new home in Waterloo with their two pets. Mark did his radio training at Humber College in Toronto -- one more credential to add to an education list that also includes a Masters degree and a Bachelors degree from University of Toronto. Mark is thoroughly enjoying the new life in K-W, and taking full advantage of the local tennis club, cigar shops, and jazz clubs. Christin Parkinson Traffic Editor/ News Reporter Christin Parkinson was born and raised just outside of Rockwood. After attending high school in Guelph, she decided to pursue a degree in Broadcasting at Conestoga College....her immense knowledge of the region and surrounding area has helped her in her Traffic reporting...however she still needs to stop and ask for directions occasionally. In Christin's spare time, she likes to go to the cottage, ski, travel, and whenever possible...sleep! JOHN WILSON 570 News Weather Specialist John has been married for almost 27 years and is 53 years old. He was born in Brandon, Manitoba and was raised in Winnipeg and Etobicoke. He graduated from York University in 1973 in political Science. John has no children, but loves cats. John’s radio career has spanned 35 years and has worked in Woodstock, London, Toronto, and London in both radio and television news. He has also taught Broadcast Journalism courses at Fanshawe College for 18 years. John considers himself something of a weather junkie (ya think??), with heavy-duty interest in golf, skiing, motorcycling and driving in general, international economics and politics, and varying interest in a million other things from crossword puzzles to coin collecting. He also enjoys reading which has results in needing an addition on the house to hold all of his books! He is also a major TV and movie fan. JEFF ALLAN The Jeff Allan Show Weekdays at 8:30am, the Tri-Cities tune in to “The Jeff Allan Show” with host Jeff Allan. Jeff has had years of experience on air. He started at Q107 in Toronto in 1987 and then went on to work on morning radio in Owen Sound, London, Winnipeg, Regina and Ottawa before coming to Kitchener. Each day, listeners to 570 News can count on Jeff to bring the news stories everyone is talking about to the table with opinion, passion and the big questions listeners want answered. GARY DOYLE The Gary Dolye Show 570 News listeners have come to know the “Gary Doyle Show” as a voice for better iving in the community. Each day from Noon to 3:00pm, Gary brings a non-controversial and confrontational approach to topics of lifestyle, money,health, finances and more. With the big news stories of the day in mind, Gary will also ask special guests and newsmakers the questions that need to be answered and will give 570 News listeners a chance to learn more or even weigh in with their own questions. Gary brings more than 30 years of broadcasting experience to the radio each day. He is also part of the Kitchener Rangers broadcast team with Don Cameron. When he's not reading afternoon sports on 570 News, you'll see him on Rogers TV interviewing local newsmakers on "Farwell Live" or calling play-by-play for the Kitchener Rangers on "OHL Primetime." In his spare time, Mike wonders what it would be like to have spare time KATE STOCKMANN Afternoon News Anchor Kate was born and raised in Ingersoll Ontario, she graduated from the Fanshawe College Broadcast Journalism program. While at Fanshawe she was the News Director of the College Radio Station. One of her classmates was her co-host Nathan Smith, they graduated together. Kate was hired out of school by AM980, working as the morning show producer and mid morning reporter/anchor as needed. She also worked as a reporter/anchor in Simcoe at CD98.9, in Toronto at AM640 & CFRB. BLAIR ADAMS Afternoon News Editor-Writer-Sports Blair is a graduate of the Broadcast-Journalism program at Fanshawe College. He experienced –49 degrees celsius during two winters working for a station in Yellowknife, NWT. Some of the big stories he's covered include 9-11, the Walkerton e-coli outbreak, the Kitchener Rangers 2003 Memorial Cup win, and the grand opening of Canada's first diamond mine. He enjoys exercising, hockey, golf, listening to music, playing guitar, and movies. Blair is also a minor hockey coach with the Kitchener Minor Hockey Association. Arlene Dowell Editor Arlene is afternoon editor and says she enjoys the fast pace of the afternoon. Before joining the 570 news team she made stops at several other stations in the area and has also worked in Sarnia and Chatham with morning editor Paul McPhee. When not in the newsroom, Arlene enjoys running and visiting with friends and family. She also enjoys spending time at home with her husband Judd and the cutest dog in the world, Sir Monty Snugglepuss. SHERRY MORLEY Afternoon Reporter Sherry is from Stratford and is a graduate of Carleton University with a bachelors degree in journalism and law. She won the 'online junkie' award in her class, but still can't figure out why. She got her radio start in Owen Sound as a reporter and news anchor. A year later, she picked up and moved out to Saint John, New Brunswick to work for Rogers News 88.9 but was later shipped back home to 570 News, where she considers herself lucky to be learning from the some of the best in the business. She likes sketching, running, rollerblading and ultimate frisbee and watching baseball and hockey. Lyndsey Vanstone Traffic reporter Lyndsey was born in Owen Sound but grew up in the very small town of Erin, Ontario. She graduated from the Broadcast Journalism program at Seneca College in 2005 and moved to the region at the end of that year to start her radio career as an Afternoon News Anchor in Waterloo. From there she co-hosted a Morning Show in Woodstock before joining the 570 News team early in 2007. Lyndsey is now one of the Weekend News Anchors on 570 NEWS. In her spare time, Lyndsey enjoys hosting get-togethers, watching/playing sports, watching movies and listening to an eclectic collection of music including the Tragically Hip, Aerosmith, AC/DC and even some country. Lyndsey lives with her two cats Jax and Layla in the town of Elmira. PAUL HERRIOT Morning Show Producer Paul comes to us from just down the street, literally just down the street. Born and raised in K-W it all began in 1985 when Paul got a Fisher-Price tape recorder for his 6th birthday. He’s been fascinated with sound ever since which makes him the perfect canadate as the technical producer for both the morning and afternoon shows here at 570 NEWS. Paul literally grew up listening to 570 NEWS and considers himself very honored to be working with some of the people he grew up listening to Like Glenn Pelletier, Gary Doyle and Lisa Drew. The first thing he ever said to Lisa when he started in 2004 was “wow, you’ve been here a long time”. 2006 marks Paul’s 10th year in broadcasting. The remarkable thing is he’s only 27. While still in high School, he volunteered at a local campus radio station. Where he was involved in a number of different shows over a 5 year period. In 2001 he trekked off to radio school at Loyalist College in Belleville, Ontario (the same college Gary Doyle went to… many years ago). He was involved in the radio station at the college as the music director in his second year. Paul has been employed at two radio stations thus far in his career. The first one in Cobourg Ontario where he was the “Summer Cruiser Reporter” for two summers. He’s since made his way to 570 NEWS, he couldn’t turn down the opportunity to work, not only in his home town, but working in the talk radio format. MEGHAN GROFF Afternoon Show Producer-Programming Assistant Meghan Groff was born about 10 km's away from the Canadian border in Dearborn, Michigan. She moved to Canada at a young age and grew up in Cambridge, Ontario. After graduating from Southwood Secondary School, she headed down to Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Why?..."cause it looked nice in the pamphlet". Meghan started working at 570 NEWS part time during her summer breaks from University. She started out in the Promotions Department, helping out live station broadcasts and also attended many community festivals and fundraisers as the 570 NEWS Summer Events Reporter. She was hired full time at the station upon graduating from Ball State, just as 570 switched to it's news/talk format…and actually pushed the button to launch the new station just before 6AM on June 19, 1997. Since then she's produced various shows. Currently she's the technical producer/call screener for The Jeff Allan show and also the Programming Assistant for 570 NEWS. When not working, Meghan likes to golf, read, rollerblade, play ultimate frisbee...and when she has the time and money, explore different corners of the world. JESSIE LORRAINE Talk Show Host Producer Jessie graduated with a degree in Broadcast Journalism, Mohawk College in Hamilton, after that: She worked for three years in Toronto in a tiny, depressing cubicle in accounts receivable… One day she just QUIT, and decided to follow her dream to be in RADIO, (much to the dismay of her parents) Jessie began reporting at CFOS in Owen Sound, before moving to the FAN 590, in Toronto. In 2005 she moved to Kitchener to join the team at 570 news, as the Producer of the Jeff Allan Show. Steve Hart Anchor/Writer Steve was born in Canberra, Australia's National Capital, and began his radio career in the true 'outback' of Australia in a small town called Port Hedland in the far North West. This is where Steve began his experience as a journalist, along with all the fundamentals of radio. It wasn't long before Steve went on to do a morning show through Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, including Melbourne and Sydney. Most recently, as Program Director in Tasmania... During his time in Australia, Steve also won Australia's highest industry award - The Raward. Now, what's an Aussie doing in Southern Ontario? Well, as Steve says "It's all about a woman". Steve met a Canadian lady and recently married, and, rather than staying at home, he decided to move to Kitchener. Steve also has two teenagers to look after and possibly a puppy in the near future as well, and says "I'm very proud to be here in Canada and I've fallen in love with hockey too, what a game!" We also think there's a chance that Steve hasn't seen snow for a while or removed it from a drive way - "What's this white stuff on the ground in winter?" he says, and "Why do I need a really big shovel?" JANE MITCHINSON Weekend News Anchor Jane Mitchinson started in radio in 1989 and has been a news announcer and reporter at several stations across Ontario including our sister stations, 680 News and CHFI in Toronto. She graduated from Ryerson University in the Radio and Television Arts program in 1993. Jane joined the 570 News team in October of 2005 as a weekend news announcer. During the week, Jane teaches radio and television full-time to high school students at Waterloo Oxford District Secondary School. She lives in Kitchener with her wonderful husband, David, and three terrific children, Kaitlyn, Jamie, and Abbey. Mark Moretti Weekend News Anchor Mark may be a familiar voice to long-time 570 News listeners. From 1998 to 2002, Mark worked in a number of capacities with 570 News, including on-air news and sports, as well as in the Creative Department writing and voicing spots for clients. He’s glad to be back on the air, if only in a part-time role. Mark enjoys reading a book a week, usually non-fiction, as well as working out, and home renovation. Tiffany Hendsbee Editor-Traffic Born and raised in Kitchener Waterloo Tiffany began her radio career in high school at Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute, where she was heavily involved in the on-campus radio station. She is now a student of the Broadcasting - Radio and Television program at Conestoga College and will be graduating in April 2008. Tiffany joined 570 News in March of 2007 and is thrilled to work with this group of dedicated and talented news professionals. Janelle Einoff Editor-Traffic-Producer The Owen Sound native graduated from the Broadcasting: Radio and Television course at Conestoga College in 2007. Her start in Broadcasting wasn't in radio. Janelle went to college with her focus on television productions, which lead her to CTV Southwestern Ontario in 2005. But her time in radio class changed her career aspirations. Janelle altered her direction and applied for a Technical Operator position at 570NEWS. After a few months as an Operator, Janelle, wanting to try other areas of the industry, was taught the ropes of production. That not being enough she began producing "The Gary Doyle Show" in early 2007. When Janelle's not producing Gary's show, she also does traffic reports on Saturdays for the station. When not working, Janelle enjoys tennis, rollerblading, shopping, painting, and welding. Malinda Peck Anchor Malinda is happy to start her career off at 570 news. She graduated from Seneca College's Broadcast Journalism program in 2006. During her time at Seneca she interned at CTV in Toronto, and her favorite part of the internship was spending time at the station's Queen's Park bureau. After graduating, she moved back to her hometown of Kitchener and did some reporting at Rogers TV. When given the chance, Malinda likes to volunteer and takes particular interest in global issues. Some of her other interests include reading, baking, listening to almost any type of music, documentaries, politics.
