GARY DOYLE SHOW for Friday Mar. 7, 2014
10:00am- Paul Waldie, Globe and Mail European Bureau Chief, Re: With the Crimean government pushing ever closer to Russia, the territory’s independent media is coming under increasing attack. Officials have cut the signal of Crimea’s largest independent broadcaster, Black Sea TV, and there are several reports of journalists being beaten and detained by “self defence” forces, groups of men wearing pro-Russian ribbons who have started patrolling streets and standing in front of government buildings.
10:30am- John Jaworsky, assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Waterloo, Re: Jaworsky has a special interest in Crimea. He can speak on politics in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and the politics of nationalism and ethnicity. He says “The rhetoric used by Russia’s President Putin to justify military intervention in Crimea, is in many respects similar to the rhetoric used by Hitler just before World War II to annex Czechoslovakia in 1938, and invade Poland in 1939.”
11:00am- Michael Harris, MPP for Kitchener-Conestoga, Re: Harris is demanding fairness for firefighters who volunteer in local township departments, saying a legal fix needed to guarantee full benefits for double-hatters suffering from cancer. He says the government must take immediate action to address a long-standing gap in Ontario’s laws that could leave full-time firefighters suffering from cancer with a major shortfall in benefits just because they volunteer their services in another community.
11:30am- Ken Seiling, Chair of the Region of Waterloo, Re: Seiling has released a statement, in response to the “Stop LRT” group. They stated that “the proposed LRT does not confirm to, and is contrary to Section 24 of the Planning Act, Ontario which prohibits the undertaking of a public work that doesn’t conform to an official plan in effect.” However, Seiling says an amendment made to Section 26 in 2007 meets all the requirements of the law and that the group is trying to stall or slow down the project by suggesting they can’t proceed. He says “quite clearly we’ve reviewed this with our lawyers, quite clearly we can and we are going to proceed.”
12:00pm- Dr Yoni Freedhoff, Family doctor, Author, Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa, and founder of Ottawa’s Bariatric Medical Institute, Re: Freedhoff’s latest book “The Diet Fix: Why Diets Fail and How to Make Yours Work” tackles the “diet” issue head on with compassion, wisdom and a “you can do it” attitude. At least 90% of diets end in failure and for chronic dieters, this can mean years of compounded frustration, disappointment and shame–baggage that won’t make weight loss any easier the next time. But in “The Diet Fix”, Dr. Freedhoff breaks down the flaws in the way that we approach dieting and offers an exciting plan that will empower anyone to achieve lasting results.
12:30pm- Adam Scott, Environmental Defence’s Program Manager for Climate and Energy, Re: The National Energy Board issued a green light Thursday to energy giant Enbridge’s plan to reverse the flow and increase the capacity of a pipeline that has been running between southern Ontario and Montreal for years.
1:00pm- Natalie Dupuis, Senior Product Manager of RBC Automobile Insurance, Re: On Sunday clocks will “spring forward” then daylight saving time kicks into gear. While most Canadians will adjust their clocks, will they also adjust their driving?
A seemingly small one-hour shift in the sleep cycle can affect sleep for up to a week. And although you may not feel that tired, your driving abilities could be impacted. In fact crash statistics indicate an increase in crashes on the Monday following the time change.
1:30pm- Troy Smith, Kitchener Rangers Head Coach, Re: The Coach’s Show brought to you by Metro Karges Appliances.
1:45pm- Louis B. Hobson, Movie Critic, Re: What’s new at movie theatres this weekend.
