Waterloo Regional Police Fraud Branch detectives warn the public of a new fraud scam targeting seniors.
Police say an unknown male will telephone the unsuspecting senior and refer to them as "Grandpa" or "Grandma," and ask if they know who is calling.
The victims will provide the name of a grandchild, and the suspect will pretend to be that person, and say he needs their help, and requires money to be wired over right away.
The fake grandchild may also use an accomplice who pretends to be his lawyer, who may also pressure the victims into forwarding the money.
Police would like to remind all members of the community to avoid providing personal or financial information over the phone.
And never agree to any transactions unless they are completely satisfied with the caller's identity.
Anyone with information regarding this type of fraud is asked to contact Waterloo Regional Police Fraud Branch.
