Simcoe teen free for now

570 News - Canadian Press Jul 30, 2010 03:35:49 AM
A Simcoe teen stuck in Cuba could be back on home soil as early as Tuesday.

Cody LeCompte's unwilling vacation began when the car he was driving was hit by a truck.

He's been stranded there since April.

Cuban officials weren't allowing the 19-year-old to leave the country while they waited for a statement from the driver of the truck.

Foreign Affairs minister Peter Kent told 570's Jeff Allan show this morning that a deal has been reached, thanks to some government intervention.

Cuban police have now agreed to let his family post bail for 2,000 Cuban pesos or about 100-dollars Canadian, on the condition that he return to Cuba for a trial.

If LeCompte were to be found guilty, Kent says he would not have been released. Kent believes this case will be wrapped up, reaching an appropriate settlement, without any jail time.
