Waterloo Region is having a two-for-one sale on Grand River Transit today.
"2-for-1 Transit Tuesday" is part of the Region's efforts in the 11th Annual Commuter Challenge.
The Region's Principal Planner for Transportation Demand Management, John Hill, tells 570 News anyone who buys a fare today, uses a fare ticket, or has a bus pass can bring along another rider for free.
Hill says taking the bus is healthier than taking your own vehicle, because you can walk or bike to the bus stop; and the reduced car pollution is good for community health.
As for any public stigmas that the bus is not convenient, Hill says people don't know how the bus system works and they should visit www.grt.ca to plan their fastest route and find their nearest bus stop.
Hill says the Region needs to make transit comfortable and convenient to make it work, but he adds, "an attitude shift needs to happen" in the community.
Hill explains people need to make small behavioural changes that will yield big benefits.
A cash fare for the bus is $2.50, or five tickets for $9.00.
Also today for the Commuter Challenge is the Great Commuter Race 8:30 a.m., where local politicians race six kilometres from Davis Centre in Waterloo to Civic Square in Kitchener using various modes of transportation.
