U.S. and China mining disasters kill dozens of workers

570 News - The Associated Press Apr 06, 2010 04:20:32 AM
Officials in West Virginia say a coal mine explosion has killed 25 workers.

The Monday afternoon explosion south of Charelston rocked the remote coal mine with a history of safety problems.

Massey Energy says four miners are still missing in the Upper Big Branch mine, but the rescue mission has been halted while bore holes are drilled to vent explosive methane gas.

The explosion is the worst U.S. mine disaster since 1984 when 27 workers were killed by a fire at Emery Mining Corporation's mine in Orangeville, Utah.

Meantime in China, the search continues for 33 men still trapped in a flooded coal mine
The rescue mission is carrying on a day after 115 other miners were pulled out alive after spending a week trapped underground.
Five bodies were also recovered from the mine.
