Helicopter Crash-UPDATE

570 News Jan 28, 2012 05:43:34 AM
Retired Regional Police Chief Larry Gravill will release a report to Regional Council this coming Tuesday, on the helicopter crash that killed 29 year-old flight instructor Tiffany Hanna.

According to a report from CTV, several things went wrong the day that Hanna died. Police became aware of the exact location of the crash at 11:35am, three minutes after the chopper went down, however, firefighters and paramedics weren't made aware of the location until twelve minutes later. What made things even worse is that when the fire dispatch did go out, it was sent to the Wilmot fire station instead of Woolwich, where the crash happened.

The lack of communication and confusion between emergency services resulted in delayed response times. An Ornge air ambulance was also intentionally delayed until ground crews arrived at the scene and determined the seriousness of Hanna's injuries.

One major issue is the four separte 9-1-1 dispatch systems all in different buildings using different software. This coming Tuesday, Regional Council will be presented with a report which will be looking at challenges consolidating the systems into one, and if a faster response from emergency crews would have saved Hanna's life.
