Don Cameron Potato Night

Mike McCulloch Jan 24, 2012 13:22:06 PM
The 15th annual Don Cameron Potato Night is coming up at this Friday's Kitchener Rangers game at the Aud.

The Rangers welcome the Owen Sound Attack, and the puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

Fans are encouraged to bring along a sack of potatoes to support the House of Friendship's annual February Potato Blitz.

House of Friendship Executive Director, John Neufeld tells 570 News where those potatoes go, "most of the spuds will be taken to our emergency food hamper program where they will be distributed to people in crisis who are needing food."

Neufeld says, fans can also donate cash, "that's also greatly appreciated and we will use that cash to purchase potatoes as a reduced rate to help people in our community."

Neufeld invites fans to show their support, "come out for a great game to enjoy the Rangers, but bring a bag of spuds for your neighbours in need."

The need this year is greater than last year, "the need was going down about a year ago and then all of the sudden economic things have gone down again," Neufeld said, "and so we felt that need increase this past year again at our food hampers program. So again, it has increased from 2010 to 2011, so we're trying to respond to that need now to the best of our abilities."

Neufeld adds that he would like to thank the community for their continued support, "we've had tremendous support at the Rangers Don Cameron Potato Nights over the last few years, and we're just trusting that the community will again come out strong for us. Thank you very much."

Don Cameron really hands it to the House of Friendship for all of their community work, "they have 19 different programs that they run in the course of the year. Many of them involve food, and with food come potatoes, and they need approximately 200, 000 lbs of potatoes to run their programs every year," Cameron said.

"Bring the potatoes and help people to get a little better life at the House of Friendship."
