Two local federal candidates decline debate

570 News Apr 19, 2011 14:42:28 PM
A local advocate for immigrants and refugees is upset that a pair of local Conservative candidates both declined a request to take part in a debate on issues of concern to that community.

Neither Kitchener-Centre candidate, Stephen Woodworth, nor Kitchener-Waterloo candidate, Peter Braid, were on hand at last night's forum at Kitchener City Hall.

Sherrie Tiessen of the Community Coalition on Refugee and Immigrant Concerns, tells 570 News she was told that Mr. Woodworth had "other obligations", and that Mr. Braid prefers to meet one on one with constituents.  Spokespeople for both offices have confirmed those explanations to 570 News.

Despite declining to participate in the debate, Mr. Woodworth and Immigration Minister, Jason Kenney, did meet with the Coalition on April 11.
