Last night I watched a wonderful documentary about the Royal Navy, the Royal Canadian Navy and the Merchant Marines who fought in the Battle of the Atlantic during WW2, the longest battle of the war. I was amazed at their age. Most of the men interviewed were hardly men when they served. I couldn’t believe how old they were. They were serving on the dangerous north Atlantic when they were 16, 17 and 18 years old! Today these proud veterans would not be allowed to serve under the U.N protocol. That’s ridiculous. The U.N child soldier thing was well intended and the spirit of it was good. They wanted to stop the practise of Warlords using young drug addicted boys to do their dirty work and I agree with that in principal, but it’s obvious that young men or older boys can serve their country as was proved in the second world war.
