I understand that Ontario is not the first province to sue big tobacco, but I certainly wish it had not become the 6th. Just let it stand at 5. The lawsuit makes absolutely no sense to me. I am not a smoker, nor do I condone the habit. But on what grounds is such a lawsuit based? The province has collected billions of dollars in tax revenue from the sale of this legal product and now it thinks it’s also entitled to 50-billion dollars in costs to recoup that which has been spent on healthcare associated to smoking? Aren’t those tax revenues supposed to be easing the smoking-related strain on our healthcare system? This lawsuit is nothing more than a smoke screen on the part of a province that doesn’t have the guts to make smoking illegal. Plain and simple.
