SEATTLE – It’s going to take time to find both short- and long-term fixes for the bridge that collapsed on Interstate 5, Washington state officials said Saturday as federal inspectors scoured for clues that may impact bridge safety across the nation.

First, the National Transportation and Safety Board must finish its inspection. Then debris will be removed from the river. Next, a temporary solution will be put in place to return traffic to Washington state’s most important north-south roadway.

Inspectors are working to find out whether the disintegration on Thursday of the heavily used span over the Skagit River, 60 miles north of Seattle and 40 miles south of the Canadian border, was a fluke or a sign of bigger problems.

“These things take time. We want to make sure it’s done right, done thoroughly,” Washington Transportation Department spokesman Bart Treece said.

A trucker was hauling a load of drilling equipment Thursday evening when his load bumped against the steel framework over the bridge. He looked in his rearview mirror and saw the span collapse into the water behind him.

Two vehicles fell into the chilly river. The three people in those vehicles were not seriously hurt.

Motorists should not expect to drive onI-5 between Mount Vernon and Burlington for many weeks and possibly months, Treece said.

Treece asked people to plan for an extra hour to make their way through detours around the collapsed bridge. There are three detour options northbound and two options southbound.

About 71,000 vehicles use that stretch of highway every day. Late Saturday morning, traffic was moving freely through the detours.

“We’re expecting it to get worse as the day progresses,” Treece said, noting that at 11 a.m. cloudy skies and cool weather could be keeping Memorial Day weekend travellers at home.

State transportation officials began working on both a temporary solution and a permanent fix within hours of the bridge collapse, he said.

The goal is to get I-5 open as quickly as possible, while making sure the solution is as safe as possible, he added.

Officials were looking for a temporary, pre-fabricated bridge to replace the 160-foot section that failed, Gov. Jay Inslee said Friday. That option could be in place in weeks. Otherwise, it could be months before a replacement can be built, the governor said.

Inslee said it will cost $15 million to repair the bridge. The federal government has promised $1 million in emergency dollars and more money could come later, according to Washington’s congressional delegation.

NEW DELHI – Police say suspected Maoist rebels attacked a convoy of cars carrying local leaders and supporters of India’s ruling Congress party in eastern India, killing at least 16 people and wounding 25 others.

Senior police officer M. Gupta said suspected insurgents triggered a land mine blast and fired at the vehicles on Saturday in the Sukma area, about 215 miles (345 kilometres) south of Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh (Chuht-tihs-guhr) state.

Sonia Gandhi, the Congress party president, is calling it a “dastardly attack” on the country’s democratic values.

The rebels have been fighting the central government for more than four decades, demanding land and jobs for tenant farmers and the poor.

To rousing applause, director Rithy Panh collected the award at a ceremony Saturday night, expressing his gratitude to be able “to have the freedom to do the films I want to do.”

The “Un Certain Regard” accolade, presented one day before the Palme d’Or, is often seen to reward up-and-coming filmmakers and works that transmit original messages and esthetics.

Panh’s film, based on his nightmarish memoir “The Elimination,” documents his own family’s experience under the heavy-handed Communist Party’s Khmer Rouge that resulted in the death of his parents and sisters.

The stabbing comes just days after a British soldier was hacked to death on a London street in broad daylight in a suspected terrorist attack that has raised fears of potential copycat strikes. However, there was no immediate confirmation of any link to the France attack on Saturday.

The France military spokesman, Col. Thierry Burkhard, said the French soldier was wounded but that his life was not in danger. He had no immediate further details on the stabbing.

CANNES, France – Jerry Lewis, so beloved in France, isn’t quite overcome with emotion now that he’s back at the Cannes Film Festival.

The festival, he says, is “for snobs,” and when he meets a reporter from his native land, he exhales, “It’s so nice to hear an American.” To him, Cannes isn’t an epicenter of rabid Lewis fandom, it’s simply “business,” he says, chomping on gum.

And at 87, Lewis is back in business. Nearly two decades since his last film, he’s at Cannes with “Max Rose,” a modest independent film in which he stars as an elderly man reconciling himself to life without his late wife.

“I’m very happy to relax and stay home with my family, and if something comes up, I’ll consider it,” Lewis, in an interview, said of his return to movies. “That’s the nice part about 87. You just tell people: Oh, you’re very tired.”

At Cannes, Lewis has been anything but tired, both burnishing and tarnishing his legacy as a brilliant comedic performer. His Cannes tribute — the festival paid “homage” to him in an out-of-competition screening of “Max Rose,” as well as with a screening of his 1961 classic “The Ladies Man” — has been overshadowed by his views about female comedians.

In a press conference, Lewis told reporters that his earlier-stated feelings haven’t changed in recent years: Comedy isn’t for women, he claims. A day after his comments roiled women across the Internet, Lewis wasn’t apologetic, saying he sees females as mothers, not stand-ups.

“It’s the truth. I can’t help it,” Lewis says, shrugging. “Women, it’s just wrong. I don’t care that the audience laughs at it and likes it. I don’t happen to like it. I have too much respect for the gender. And I think that they are wrong in doing it. I can’t expect them to stop working, but just don’t work anywhere where I have to look at it.”

It’s a clearly out-of-date attitude that has turned many away from Lewis. In Cannes, “Max Rose” didn’t help his reputation. The film, by first-time filmmaker Daniel Noah, drew terrible reviews at the festival. Variety said only “the most irrationally charitable of Lewis’ fans” will appreciate it.

But such opinions mean little to Lewis. He made the film with Noah purely because he liked the script — the best he’s ever read, he says. It’s the rare film to tell a story about the struggles of growing older, featuring a downbeat performance from Lewis far from the elastic farce his fans are accustomed to seeing.

Asked why he hadn’t made a film since 1995′s “Funny Bones,” Lewis responds: “You see the movies they’re putting out? What am I going to do, discuss that?”

Noah, who wrote the script based on his grandfather, sought out Lewis with little expectation of landing him. Months after sending the screenplay, Lewis called him and committed over the phone. Lewis told him he hadn’t planned to make another film, but decided, “I gotta give them one more Jerry picture.”

“I was braced for a difficult experience,” says Noah. “I saw nothing but horror stories about how he was controlling and irascible and unpredictable and moody. . But I cannot explain to you the chasm between the man that othjcoers seem to know and the man that I know. I have not had a single moment of tension with him, of difficulty. He has been like a grandfather to me.”

Noah says Lewis — who helmed more than a dozen films in his career, including 1963′s “The Nutty Professor” — left the directing completely to him. He gave his famous star little direction, save for the occasional reminder to be more minimal, more “sad clown,” says Noah.

“He’s a wonderful kid,” says Lewis. “When you’re 87, almost everybody’s a kid.”

Lewis has continued to perform concerts — “a wonderful way to make a fortune,” he says. Retirement is not on the table. “I’m happiest when I’m on the stage,” says Lewis, who was honoured with the Academy Awards’ humanitarian award in 2009 after years of telethon hosting for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

“Wherever the audience is is where you want to go,” he says. “And if you’re a ham, like me, you go wherever the action is. You see a lens and a crew and say, ‘Yeah!’”

At the press conference in Cannes, Lewis proved that he still has his pugnacious wit and eagerness for laughs.

Asked about Dean Martin, Lewis’ famed comedy partner in the ’50s, he responded: “He died, you know. When I arrived here and he wasn’t here I knew something was wrong.” (Martin, with whom Lewis parted acrimoniously, died in 1995.)

“I’ve worked hard to sustain a reputation of: If you buy a ticket, you know you’re going to get entertained,” says Lewis. “That’s what I was taught.”

Lewis may be many things — talented, funny, honest, out-of-touch, sexist — but perhaps above all else, he’s an entertainer. “Max Rose” marks his 82nd year performing.

Spokesman André Brin says the motion passed today at a meeting in Charlottetown, with only Saskatchewan voting against banning bodychecking.

Brin says the board of directors has agreed to develop a bodychecking standard for coaching to be implemented in the 2014-15 hockey season.

Earlier this month, both Hockey Alberta and Hockey Nova Scotia voted to remove bodychecking for their peewee players, who are typically 11 and 12 years old.

Quebec had also already banned bodychecking at the peewee level.

SASKATOON – It’s not hard to be overlooked as a player when your roster includes two of the top prospects for the NHL draft.

Star forwards Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin, ranked as the No. 2 and No. 3 North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting, have been the focus for the Halifax Mooseheads all season.

But coaches and teammates alike point to 17-year-old goalie Zachary Fucale as an equally important member of the high-scoring Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champions.

“He deserves more credit overall,” Mooseheads coach Dominique Ducharme said this week at the MasterCard Memorial Cup. “There’s so much talk about our offence that obviously there’s sometimes where he’s getting forgotten.”

Mooseheads players say Fucale, who his ranked as the No. 1 North American goalie ahead of the draft and turns 18 next week, has poise beyond his years.

“He’s a guy that’s very mature. He acts like he’s 30,” said MacKinnon, whose team lost just six games during the regular season. “He doesn’t get a lot of credit. He’s been unbelievable. He helped us win the QMJHL championship and hopefully can help us win the Memorial Cup as well.

“Maybe if he was on a different team he’d be a little more looked at.”

Fucale helped lead the Mooseheads to a 58-6-4 record in the regular season, compiling a personal stat line of 45-5-2 to go along with a 2.35 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage. Halifax cruised through the QMJHL playoffs with a 16-1 mark, and after a 2-1 round robin at the Memorial Cup, is set to meet the Western Hockey League champion Portland Winterhawks in Sunday’s final.

“It’s hard not to fly under the radar when you’ve got Nathan and Jonathan on our team but Zach definitely deserves to be ranked where he is,” Mooseheads defenceman Trey Lewis said. “Sometimes I don’t think people give him the credit he deserves but he’s been huge for us all year.”

Fucale, a native of Rosemere, Que., says he doesn’t worry about the attention he gets and instead takes a philosophical approach to his game and a position that’s constantly under the microscope.

“As a player and as a person I just want to play the game hard and get better every day and whatever happens, it’s good for me,” he said. “Whether is a good thing or a bad thing for me (now), it can only be a good thing for me in the future and make me stronger as a person and a goalie.”

With so much talent at the Memorial Cup — there were at least eight potential first-round picks — Mooseheads defenceman MacKenzie Weegar says it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle, but adds the Mooseheads understand Fucale’s importance both on and off the ice.

“Zach has been unbelievable. As much as Nate and Jonathan carry this team, you’ve got to give a lot of credit to Zach,” Weegar said. “He keeps us in tight games when the other teams have got momentum and he’s the one that bounces us back and he’s always got a great attitude no matter how the period ends.

“He’s a really mature kid and I think that’s what helps him in his success.”

PHOENIX – Two people familiar with the situation say the NHL has approved the sale of the Phoenix Coyotes to a group of Canadian-led investors, but the deal is contingent on reaching a lease agreement with the city of Glendale.

The NHL agreed to sell the team to Renaissance Sports & Entertainment, a group headed by George Gosbee and Anthony LeBlanc, according to the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because there had been no official announcement.

They said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, deputy commissioner Bill Daly and the prospective buyers will meet with Glendale officials on Tuesday for talks on a lease.

The NHL bought the Coyotes out of U.S. Bankruptcy Court in 2009 and has tried without success to find a buyer who would keep the team in Glendale.
