Democracy advocate weighs in on amalgamation issue
An advocate for democracy in this country says Waterloo City Council may have done the right thing in not acceding to the wishes of a vocal minority of voters.
A group of business and community leaders was hoping for council to put the amalgamation question on the muncipal ballot in the form of a referendum.
But, Duff Conacher of Democracy Watch tells 570 News they would've had a stronger case, if they had approached council with a petition instead.
Conacher says if five per cent of voters indicated they wanted a referendum on amalgamation, it would be un-democratic of council to not bend to the will of the people.
