Friday is ‘Red Day’, raising awareness for women’s heart health

Nearly 25,000 Canadian women die each year because of it, and you can do your part today to raise awareness for women’s cardiac health.

Today is St. Mary’s “Red Day” across Waterloo Region.

“We know that most women think that cardiac disease…is more commonly a male affliction,” says St. Mary’s General Hospital Foundation spokesperson Amy Hazelwood, “But we actually know that heart disease is the leading cause of premature death for Canadian women.”

She says you can do your part in a couple of different ways.

One of those ways is as simple as wearing a red shirt.

Hazelwood is also urging those participating to post a picture through social media, using #RedDayFriday

Another is to donate to the cause on their website.

Manulife will match donations up to $200,000.

And all money raised will go towards the cardiac care centre at St. Mary’s, to establish a third catheterization lab.
