SIU invokes mandate after WRPS suspect struck on Weber Street

A busy stretch of Weber Street was shut down for hours through Kitchener on Tuesday for a police investigation.
WRPS Spokesperson Cherri Greeno tells 570 NEWS a crash occurred between Arlington and Fergus Avenue early Tuesday afternoon.
“It happened around 12:30 p.m., and the SIU has been contacted and has invoked their mandate.”
In statement, Regional Police say officers were attempting to arrest a suspect in connection to an investigation into a stolen vehicle, “During the investigation, there was a collision involving the suspect and a passing vehicle.”
Weber was completely closed for hours for the investigation – but the roadway full reopened late Tuesday evening.
In a statement, a spokesperson confirms the Special Investigations Unit was called in.
“Waterloo Regional Police arrested a man in connection with a stolen vehicle investigation. A woman who was with the man fled, and an officer followed. The woman ran onto the street and was struck by a vehicle. The woman was transported to hospital for treatment of serious injuries.”
Five investigators, two forensic investigators, and one collision re-constructionist have been assigned to this incident.
The SIU investigates all reports involving police where there is death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
