Uptown Waterloo streetscape project to wrap up soon

The streets of Uptown Waterloo will soon be back to normal but this time with some added flare.

Over the next eight weeks the streetscape project is set to be almost complete with the focus mainly on the bike lanes.

Tracy Van Kalsbeek executive director of the Uptown Waterloo Business Improvement Area said the bike lanes will provide more safety to the area.

“The bike lanes up here are actually up off the road, so in my mind it is a much safer space to be for biking than on the road,” said Van Kalsbeek.

Eric Saunderson, the project manager at the Region of Waterloo said the completed project is going to be turning a lot of heads.

“When this work is all completed there it is going to be an attraction, it’s really going to be exciting, it is really going to be something that people are talking about,” said Saunderson.

There will also be some aesthetic improvements with the addition of an exciting lighting display to Uptown Waterloo later this summer.

This lighting display is going to consist of 17,000 individual colour changing programmable lights that will be installed to create an atmosphere for each time of year.

“They took the inspiration from the Champs-Élysées, in Paris where there lighting kind of up through the trees, and up the street,” said Van Kalsbeek.
