SIU clears OPP of wrongdoing in arrest in Gowanstown; also points out “attitude” of suspect

The Special Investigations Unit is not only clearing Perth County OPP of wrongdoing when a suspect got hurt during an arrest, the agency’s director is also noting a disturbing attitude from that suspect.

The SIU says two officers put a man on the ground last July during a domestic abuse investigation in Gowanstown, near Listowel.

The man suffered injuries to his hip, and later showed signs of a concussion and vision problems.

SIU Director Tony Loparco says there is no evidence of excessive use of force by the officers.

But he also says in his ruling, the suspect was wrong to complain about being arrested for alleged domestic abuse when he had been cleared in the courts on that very charge from a different arrest before.

“What was not appropriate was the Complainant thinking that he had a free pass and did not have to comply with the police officers….simply because he had been acquitted of the same charge in the past,” says Loparco.
