Guelph Hydro warns of sophisticated phone scam

A new hydro scam is making the rounds in Guelph, and officials are calling it nothing short of sophisticated.
Guelph Hydro was bombarded with calls from customers on Wednesday, after they received threatening calls from someone demanding an immediate payment due to an ‘overdue account’.
Victims were then told to call a number which featured an automated voice saying – “Guelph Hydro Utility Billing Line”, and asked for the customers’ account number and credit card information.
Guelph Hydro says they would never ask for information this way – and you would receive multiple notices by phone, mail, and in-person before any disconnection.
If you get one of these calls, report it to Guelph Hydro at 519-822-3010 – and they’re also asking that you spread the word to friends and family, so they don’t get duped.
