Police Week kicks off with open houses in Cambridge, Guelph

First responders of all stripes are joining Regional Police today.

In keeping with this year’s Police Week theme of “Celebrating Policing and Community Partnerships,” Waterloo Regional Police and other first responders are all taking part in an open house.

It runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., from their headquarters at 200 Maple Grove Road in Cambridge.

Regional Police Inspector Mike Haffner says it’s a great opportunity to show the public how a police organization works.

Fire and EMS officials, the OPP and police canine units will all be in attendance to answer any questions.

Speaking of the canine unit, Haffner says if you want to get close to the dogs, ask permission from the canine officer first.

Otherwise, there’s lots to enjoy for people of all ages.

That includes live music, demonstrations and displays from the Emergency Response Team and the Traffic Motorcycle Unit, unique photo opportunities, displays and information booths, a charity BBQ, pedal cars, balloon twisting clown, puppet show, Jack the Nimble Bus, pony rides, climbing wall, bouncy castle and face painting and a 9-1-1 simulator to show children what happens when they dial the emergency number.

Admission is free, but Haffner encourages you to bring a non-perishable food item to benefit the Food Bank of Waterloo Region.

Guelph Police are also hosting an open house at City Hall on Saturday.

It’s taking place until 12 p.m., and will feature demonstrations, face painting, and a free BBQ.
