Ontario’s transportation minister thinks municipalities are looking for ways to enhance sidewalk security, after the driver of a van mounted a busy Toronto sidewalk and killed 10 pedestrians.
In the hours that followed the Yonge Street tragedy, temporary concrete barriers were put up outside Toronto’s Union Station.
Cambridge MPP and transportation minister Kathryn McGarry says she’s not aware of any similar interim security measures in Waterloo Region, but it’s a conversation municipalities are having.
McGarry says she believes protecting vulnerable pedestrian zones from vehicles will factor into future street planning for municipalities.
“I think when this kind of event occurs in any given city, there is thought and discussion moving forward to see if there’s anything further that can be done in a design of a street.”
Regional Police already install barriers during outdoor festivals and events.
