Guelph homeowner confronts B & E suspect in driveway

It’s not something anyone would expect to wake up to – you’re in your bed sleeping, hear a noise, and notice someone broke in and robbed you.

That’s what happened to a homeowner on Stevenson Street in Guelph early Wednesday morning.

Constable Mike Gatto says a man was jolted awake around 3:30 a.m., and quickly noticed property had been stolen from inside his home.

“A male gained entry to the home, had stolen some property, was exiting the home, and was on the person’s driveway. The noise that had been created by the entry did alert one of the residents – they woke up, got out of bed, and were able to see the male on their driveway, with their property.”

Gatto says things escalated when the homeowner saw a suspect standing there, and an altercation ensued.

“That male was then confronted by the resident – which led to a disturbance. Police were called, and the man was arrested.”

No major injuries were reported in the scuffle.

Gatto adds in this case, it all worked out well – but you should always use caution, as you never know who you’re dealing with.

“When you have these types of situations, you don’t know if the person has any weapons or is armed, or what they’re willing to do to get away from you. The proper plan would be to call police, try to keep an eye on the person as best you can – and wait for police to get there.”

A 50-year-old Guelph man faces charges including break and enter, and trespass by night. He will appear in court in June.
