Nine dead, 16 injured after van hits pedestrians in Toronto; suspect ID’d as Alek Minassian

Police confirm nine people have died and another 16 people injured after a van crashed into pedestrians in Toronto.

Police say a white van hit the pedestrians in the Yonge Street and Finch Avenue area around 1:30 p.m.

They say the van drove away after the pedestrians were hit.

Television footage form the scene shows multiple first responders treating people on the sidewalk.

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre says it has seven patients at its trauma centre. The hospital has also locked down the emergency department as an added precaution.

The suspect has been caught and is currently in custody. He’s been identified as 25-year-old Alek Minassian, according to a CBS News source.

No word yet on charges.
