Greyhounds score series lead with less than one second left

There were only 3.5 seconds left on the clock.

The Kitchener Rangers were on the power play and had a defensive zone faceoff.

Morgan Frost won the draw to Taylor Raddysh, who took a couple strides, then went across to a pinching Conor Timmins, who scored his second of the game with still point-nine seconds left.

The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds shocked the Rangers 3-2 taking a 1-0 series lead. It was a lot to happen in 2.6 seconds.

“We showed pretty much the exact same play minus Timmins going down. We know our routes there,” said Kitchener head coach Jay McKee. “I haven’t seen the replay, but I’m assuming Nick [McHugh] just got stuck puck watching. He knows his guy is the right D. Timmins jumped by him.”

“Nick has been one of our top defensive forwards throughout the playoffs and throughout the season. It’s a tough one for him and a tough one for the team, but you win and lose as a team.”

The referees checked the video review in-house and in Toronto to make sure the puck crossed the line in time.

It has the potential making of a massive momentum builder for the ‘Hounds. But, McKee knows his team needs to forget about it.

“It doesn’t matter if they win 10-0 or in the final second, it’s one win for them and we have to regroup as a team. It’s not about the way it happened,” said McKee.

Adam Mascherin and Kole Sherwood each had two assists in the win.

“I thought they played good. I thought we played better though. We had the lead twice and we gave it up,” said Sherwood. “We have to regroup and get one here tomorrow and head back 1-1.”

Game 2 is Saturday at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie.
