Gastrointestinal outbreak at St. Mary’s; nine affected in cardiology unit

You’re being asked to postpone any non-essential visits to the cardiology unit at St. Mary’s Hospital due to an outbreak.

Officials declared a gastrointestinal outbreak in the Kitchener Hospital’s third floor inpatient Cardiology unit late Wednesday afternoon.

It comes as three patients and six staff members are experiencing uncomfortable symptoms – including vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal cramping.

Those affected have been isolated as a precaution and are under continued observation.

The Cardiology unit remains open to two visitors per patient – but anyone feeling sick should avoid the Hospital altogether during the outbreak.

If you can’t postpone your trip – you’re being asked to use hand sanitizer frequently, check in with the Hospital’s nursing station upon arrival, and make use of their available protective equipment.

St. Mary’s continues to work closely with Public Health to contain and eliminate the outbreak. You can read the full release below.
