TextNow is a free full service wireless provider, located in Waterloo, which believes your phone number is as essential as your SIN number.
Derek Ting, Co-Founder and CEO of TextNow, believes that everyone deserves the right to a phone number.
Ting says, “We wanted to create a service that gives everyone a phone service. We think it’s a crime that the only people you can get this from is from big top telecom companies.”
The only thing you need is a WiFi connection.
The company created a free app that gives you a free phone number, and with that free phone number, you can enjoy all the same services you would get from major telecom providers.
TextNow has recently partnered with Sprint and launched a low-cost phone service that has coverage outside of WiFi. The service “piggybacks” on Sprint’s Nationwide LTE Network.
Ting and his fellow colleges started TextNow at the University of Waterloo in their last co-op term.
Since then the company has grown, with 100 employees spread between Waterloo and San Francisco, with most employees located in Waterloo. In fact, the company is hiring.
Ting adds, “One of the most important core values we have as a company, is that we put people first, and we strongly believe that is the main key ingredient to success.”
He says the company wouldn’t be where they are now without building a great team and a great environment. “Work isn’t just about the paychecks,” he says.
Currently, the company is looking for local talent to help them in their mission: “To bring down the big telecom companies.”
