As Canadians donate millions of dollars to the GoFundMe campaign for the Humboldt Broncos, Ontario hockey fans have started to notice the 50/50 draw at their local arena is not allowed to chip in.
Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario spokesperson, Ray Kahnert tells the Mike Farwell Show on 570 NEWS their regulations stipulate all such draws in Ontario must benefit Ontario residents.
He says though it would be perfectly legal if the charities operating 50/50’s simply inform the people buying the tickets that half the money they’re spending will not be going into the prize pool they could win.
Instead it will be going to the Broncos as a donation.
Or, the volunteers selling the tickets could collect donation as a completely separate task from selling their own tickets.
Kahnert adds the AGCO is willing to find ways to help in such a unique situation as the Broncos tragedy.
