Buddy League brings open, adaptive baseball to Cambridge

It’s the chance to make friends, have fun, and play baseball.

That’s the philosophy of a new adaptive sports program for kids and adults with special needs in Waterloo Region.

Cam Linwood is behind Buddy League Canada, and says it’s basically baseball for everyone.

“It’s for kids age 5 and up – and it really just gives them a chance to play baseball in a safe, supportive, and friendly environment.”

He says regardless of experience or skill-level, the main goal is to come out and enjoy the game.

“In Buddy League, you don’t need to know how to throw a ball, hit a home run, or catch a flyball – but we guarantee that by the end of the season, all of our players will have had a chance to do all of that and so much more.”

Buddy League is new to Canada – but not North America.

Linwood says the initiative actually started in Texas about 15 years ago.

“Back in 2013, there was a big documentary about it – which really inspired me to pick up the program. I had a chance to talk with the organizers down there, and they’re really excited that Buddy League is coming to Canada. I think a few of them are even coming up for Opening Day, so it’s going to be a great event.”

The adaptive program will primarily operate out of the City of Cambridge, but anyone in Waterloo Region and beyond can sign-up – as long as you’re willing to travel.

“The City and community of Cambridge have been incredibly supportive so far. We’re certainly still reaching out to the community and others looking for that support, and looking for sponsors for the program. We’re really just trying to build that awareness, as it’s a brand new initiative,” says Linwood.

He adds that registration will open in the next few weeks, and their big Opening Day is set for June 9.

If you want a head start, there is good news – as pre-registration is already open online. You can sign-up and learn more by visiting the Buddy League Canada website, or Facebook.
