A loud, working smoke alarm is being credited for waking tenants with a puppy early Saturday morning, and warning them to a fire in their Cambridge rental unit.
Fire crews were called to the residence on Dundas Street North around 5:30 a.m. Over a dozen firefighters fought the basement fire, officials say likely started due to a nail shellac kit. The cause is not considered suspicious.

Residents of the home were able to get out safely, and the blaze was quickly contained and extinguished shortly before 7 a.m.
Cambridge Platoon Chief Mike Pauze tells 570 NEWS the tenants were alerted by the smoke alarm on the main floor, as the basement smoke alarm was disabled.

Damage is estimated at $150,000. The Red Cross has been called in to help the displaced tenants.
Dundas Street North was blocked between Elgin and Lowell Streets while the fire was active.
