Threat against U.S. school leads to arrest of Brantford teen

A 14-year-old girl from Brantford has been charged after posting a school shooting threat online.

It happened just before noon on Tuesday, and U.S. officials in Hanover, New Hampshire traced the Instagram threat to Canada.

Canadian police then conducted a search warrant in Brantford – where they seized electronic devices, and charged a teen.

The threat reportedly mentioned a shooting – and a 14-year-old girl was arrested Tuesday just before 9 p.m.

She is charged with Uttering Threats to Cause Bodily Harm or Death under the Criminal Code. She cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

In a release, Brantford police say threatening social media posts are taken very seriously, and are not treated as juvenile pranks.

“The BPS treats acts of violence or threats of violence the same, they will be fully investigated and if warranted charges will be laid. These acts include the threat to public safety and our community.”

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with further information can contact BPS at 519-756-0113 ext. 2265 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
