Waterloo’s Boris berates Blueshirts

By Chris Pope

Boris Katchouk continues to conquer the Kitchener Rangers.

The Waterloo-native scored the game-winner Friday evening, and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds grounded the Rangers 4-3, completing the season sweep.

The Greyhounds grabbed three goals in the first period, including one from Katchouk, in a matter of under four minutes. The Soo came into the game 40-1-1 when scoring first, which is something Kitchener head coach Jay McKee pointed out.

“They were goals I really didn’t like,” said McKee. “You do that against that team, and you’re going to have a hard time finding a way to win.”

Adam Mascherin would earn his 39th of the year before the opening frame was over, before Kitchener climbed back with two power play goals to tie the game in the first 61 seconds of the third.

“It was nice having the end of the period so we could retouch on some things,” said McKee. “They got us back in it. I thought we competed after the first three we spotted them.”

But it was Katchouk that split Logan Stanley and Connor Hall, went skate-to-stick and slid home the winner in the final frame, before visibly shushing the vibrant crowd at the Aud.

Give the Waterloo native 14 points in 11 games against the Rangers in the last three years, including six points in three games this year.

“We had our top two defencemen out against Katchouk’s line when he got on the inside of them and scored the game-winner,” pointed out McKee. “It’s a game of inches. It’s a highlight real goal. He has that ability to score that goal, so we just have to be a touch cleaner, and be better in the beginning of games against them.”

Adam Mascherin and Joseph Garreffa had three points each, while Kole Sherwood added two in the loss.

Three of the four games against the CHL’s top ranked team have been decided by one goal. That’s something the Blueshirts bench boss believes betters his team.

“You certainly want another shot,” said McKee. “That’s one of the best built CHL teams I’ve ever seen. They have scoring on every line. They have speed on every line. Their D is as good as I’ve ever seen a D Core. Their goalie, his stats are off the record.”

Kitchener is back at home Sunday afternoon against former Ranger Mason Kohn, former Kitchener head coach Troy Smith and the Saginaw Spirit.
