Clocks spring forward this weekend

March is here and even though we may be experiencing cold weather still, it’s time to get ready for spring!

Daylight Saving Time is one of the sure signs that warmer weather is on its way.

John Percy with Waterloo Fire says even though we lose an hour of sleep, while we change our clocks, it’s a good opportunity for us to do something else in our homes. “We want everyone listening to remember to change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, those batteries don’t last forever.”

Percy says it’s so important to do so because unfortunately during the first 10 days of January this year, there were 8 fatalities in Ontario due to carbon monoxide and fire alarms not working. “One of the real big ones that came to heart was there was a family in Oshawa that died and as a result of the investigation they found there were no working smoke alarms.”

Percy adds that this weekend is also a great time to develop and practice a home fire escape plan.

The clocks spring forward at 2 a.m. tonight, so don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed.
