Minister of Science talks budget investment during stop at U-W

The Minister of Science was at the University of Waterloo on Tuesday morning to discuss the impact the 2018 budget will have on Canada’s innovation capacity and research community.

Last week, the federal government announced it was investing over $6 billion in what the government calls “the people behind the ideas that will change the way we live our lives.”

That includes $1.2 billion for the granting councils, over $760 million for the Canada Foundation for Innovation and $140 million for colleges and polytechnics.

Kirsty Duncan also took part in a panel discussion with students.

“My message to our outstanding scientists: we went big so you could go even bigger. With Budget 2018, we are making historic investments in fundamental research so that the next generation of scientists and scholars can fulfill their greatest ambitions. Our investment will empower more women, Indigenous peoples and those otherwise under-represented in research to pursue a career in the sciences-one that will help drive innovation, create new jobs, and support a strong and growing middle class.” said Duncan.
