No ice fishing on Guelph Lake, ever: OPP issue reminder

No ice fishin’ for you! That’s the word from Wellington County OPP, after they caught a man ice fishing on Guelph Lake.

Constable Joshua Cunningham says they got the call from a concerned citizen on January 27th.

“When OPP attended the scene — we found a 41-year-old Guelph man out ice fishing. Ice fishing is prohibited on Guelph Lake — as it’s not one of the lakes where reservoirs are monitored by the GRCA. So there was the possibility that it was risky behaviour.”

The Guelph man has been charged with trespassing, and was issued a provincial offence notice.

Cunningham says if you ever see someone doing something unsafe — contact authorities.

“This is one of those situations where we all need to work together,” says Cunningham. “The person fishing, the police, the authorities, and the public all have to be looking out for each other — and making sure we’re all safe.”

Cunningham adds that everyone needs to pay attention to closures and warnings: “We want people outside and enjoying the outdoors – but at the same time, we need to be watchful and make sure everyone is enjoying themselves in a safe manner.”

Meantime, Cam Linwood with the Grand River Conservation Authority says due to warmer temperatures and rainfall — waterways could be a bit dangerous this long weekend.

“We’re seeing some warmer temperatures moving into the watershed prior to the weekend, and that warming spell will continue into Monday and Tuesday,” Linwood says. That will make ice conditions significantly less safe than they were just a week ago.”

Linwood adds you’ll want to stay well back from waterways, keep our pets on leashes, and stay safe out there.
