Water main break shuts down Courtland Avenue until Friday

Courtland Avenue remains closed between Siebert and Shelley after a serious water main break.

Tammer Gaber is Manager of Operations with Kitchener Utilities.

“Friday morning, we’ll be making further road repairs. Around noon, we’ll have a better understanding on when we can reopen that road.”

Gaber says luckily, water will be restored to affected customers by midnight Thursday.

Many people were without water throughout the day after the water main break.

“We got a call about 4 a.m. Thursday regarding water on the road on Courtland. Crews got out there, shut the main down, and there is significant damage to the road. It’s a 1970 ductile iron pipe; it’s an 18-inch water main.”

Gaber says their number one priority is restoring water, which is why the road repairs will continue into Friday.

“Once we’re done restoring water, we can backfill, and will be working through Friday to get the road repaired properly.”

Gaber tells 570 NEWS that Courtland Avenue is expected to fully reopen around 3 p.m. Friday.
