Victoria Street bridge over expressway now closed until November

Starting January 29th, the Victoria Street North bridge will be closed in order to facilitate its full replacement. The project is expected to last until, at least, the end of November. The bridge replacement is part of phase one of a three-phase initiative to improve Highway 7 which connects Kitchener and Guelph.

In February or March when the Victoria Street North bridge is set to be demolished, drivers using Highway 85 can expect a longer commute than usual. Liane Fischer Bloxam, the Communications Coordinator for the Ministry of Transportation West says “for that 24-hour closure in a month or two, we will expect some major delays.”

There will be two local detours in effect for the entirety of the project to minimize the impact. One detour will be for local residents and businesses, the other for through traffic. Local residents will be asked to use Edna, Frederick and Bruce Streets to travel. Through traffic will be traveling on Wellington St, Shirley Avenue and Bingemans Centre Drive.

The cost of replacing the Victoria Street Bridge is estimated to be $18.7 Million which includes $1.3 Million which will be paid by the Municipality of Waterloo to facilitate improvements to Victoria Street itself and other smaller road improvements. The remaining $17.4 Million cost is being covered by the Government of Ontario.

There is no expected date of completion for the three-phase project.
