OPP respond to 350 collisions, four 401 closures over the weekend

Provincial police had their hands full on the weekend.

Heavy rain, turning to snow led to a string of collisions, as well as all westbound lanes of Highway 401 being closed four times in less than 24 hours.

OPP Constable Ed Sanchuck says the number of calls police responded to over the weekend was staggering.

“Between Friday and Sunday morning at 6 o’clock, we have investigated over 350 collisions across the west region. That doesn’t include people that ended up in the ditches. So, you can just imagine the number of investigations we completed over the course of Friday to Sunday morning.”

Waterloo Regional Police also responded to over two dozen crashes at the height of the snowfall on Friday.

With so many calls to attend to, Sanchuck reminds drivers to use the proper channels, and keep emergency lines free for emergencies.

“Our communication centre was inundated with calls. Please do not call 911 for road or weather conditions, call 511.”
