Regional Police chief defends fewer Festive RIDE checks last month, has plans for 2018

The Waterloo Regional Police Chief is defending the number of Festive R.I.D.E. checks carried out over the holidays.

A statement from police says between December 1st and January 1st a total of 12 Festive R.I.D.E programs were held, along with seven regular on-duty R.I.D.E programs.

Just over 2,000 vehicles were checked.

However, during the same time in 2016, there were 10 Festive R.I.D.E and 35 regular on-duty R.I.D.E programs, with more than 12,000 vehicles checked.

Chief Bryan Larkin says while there were fewer checks, the service remains committed to maintaining road safety, and refocusing the strategy for 2018.

That’s going to include more public awareness about alcohol- and drug-impaired driving.

And, teaming up with the OPP, to have them conduct R.I.D.E. checks at the borders of Waterloo Region.

Larkin says, “Waterloo Regional Police remain vigilant about identifying and removing impaired drivers from our roadways.”
