Murder suspect Ager Hasan escorted back to Waterloo Region

Waterloo Regional Police say murder suspect Ager Hasan has returned home.

A Canada-wide warrant was issued for Hasan last year in connection with the death of his ex-girlfriend, 22-year-old Melinda Vasilije.

Hasan fled the country to the United States, and was ultimately arrested in Texas in July of 2017.

Inspector Michael Haffner tells 570 NEWS that local officers from the WRPS Major Crime Unit have now successfully escorted Hasan back to Waterloo Region.

“Two officers went to Texas on Friday and brought him back to the Region. Mr. Hasan attended a show cause hearing Saturday morning, and has now been remanded in custody until Monday – when he will appear again in-person in court.”

Haffner says this finally brings some resolution to a very lengthy extradition process.

“It was a process with a lot of work done, not only by our service – but also with the Crown Attorney’s Office, U.S. Department of Justice, and the Ministry of the Attorney General. There was a lot of paperwork and other factors that had to be overcome for the extradition process, but the United States did order a ‘surrender warrant’, so we were able to go to San Antonio to pick-up Hasan.”

Haffner adds this has also been a long investigation for everyone involved.

“Hasan has been in the United States and in custody since July of 2017. Although the extradition took some time and there is a long process ahead, our hearts still go out to the Vasilije family, with the unfortunate death of Melinda.”

Hasan will appear in Kitchener court on Monday. He faces a charge of second-degree murder, and three counts of breach recognizance.

“This is still in the infancy stages, as Mr. Hasan is innocent until proven guilty,” notes Haffner. “So we do need to go through the appropriate process that takes place through our judicial system.”
