Regional Police release year-end totals for their 2017 weapons amnesty program

Even though their weapons amnesty program officially wrapped up at the end of November, Regional Police say even more guns were turned in by the end of the year.

The 2017 total was 126 firearms handed over to police with no questions asked — that includes 43 shotguns, 67 rifles, and 16 handguns.

At the end of the November campaign, it was only 32 shotguns, 45 rifles, and 10 handguns.

The end-of-year tally also includes 6,400 rounds of ammunition, 43 pellet guns, and one military ordnance.

In 2015, officers collected 68 firearms.

In an earlier release, Superintendent Patrick Dietrich says WRPS thanked everyone who called in and worked in partnership with their officers to hand a weapon over.

He said, “The success of this amnesty program means many unwanted or illegally owned guns and weapons have been taken out of our community, reducing the potential of them falling into the wrong hands.”
