Canadian Blood Services says 1,200 donations needed over holidays

Canadian Blood Services is looking to the public for help as it deals with an urgent blood shortage in the region.

1200 donations will be needed over the next two weeks, which means clinics around the region will be open regular hours.

Tara Gutscher, KW Territory Manager for Canadian Blood Services says it isn’t too late to safe a life this Christmas.

“”Canadian Blood Services has issued an urgent need for blood right now across Canada, and in Kitchener – Waterloo area specifically we need 1200 blood donors in the next two weeks to come in and help save lives.”

Gutscher says cancer patients are especially in need this season.

“People going through cancer treatment use blood on a regular basis, and platelets, a component of blood, only have a shelf life of seven days. So you coming in to donor is literally helping someone in the next week locally.”

Two clinics will be open on Boxing Day.

The KW Blood Donor Clinic on Bridgeport Road will be open from 10 AM until 2 PM.

The Guelph Blood Donor Clinic will also be open from 8 AM – 12 PM.

Gutscher says in addition, a special clinic will be open at the Cambridge Centre on Boxing Day for anyone to drop by and donate.
