Fatal crash at Roseville Church means the end for 136 year old building

A church in Roseville has received more bad news after a crash last week killed a 62-year-old woman.

On Friday December 8th the woman’s SUV left the road and struck the Roseville Brethren United Church causing severe damage to the 136 year-old building.

Pastor Randy Magnus says they found out this week that the Church was so badly damaged it would have to be torn down.

“The structural engineer came out on Monday and said the damage was too extensive and the church needs to come down completely and we’d have to do rebuild from the ground up.” said Magnus.

In the meantime the congregation is meeting in a smaller building on the property, “We have a room big enough for 130 chairs we were able to worship down there and for the foreseeable future we will be meeting down there, actually it felt kind of warm and cozy.” said Magnus.

Magnus says six local churches have stepped up to offer space if needed.

The church also received an unexpected gift from the family of victim who died in the crash.

The 62-year-old woman had no connection to the church, but her family members urged people wishing to make a contribution in her name to donate to the Roseville Brethren United Church.

“We were surprised by that, because we didn’t have a previous connection with the family, but very honoured by them for considering us in that way.” Said Magnus.

Magnus says the loss of the church and the trauma of the accident has been difficult, but he says they are trying to look for the positives.

“Somehow it makes us think more about what season is really all about, so were trying to hold on to that hope in the middle of a tough situation.” Said Magnus.

Magnus says that insurance will cover the cost of damages, and while they decide what to do next, they will continue to meet every Sunday in their new cozy accommodations.
