Waterloo Regional Police Service to host a Fraud Awareness event

Waterloo Regional Police are taking steps to ensure business owners stay safe this holiday season when it comes to counterfeit currency.

The force will be hosting a Fraud Awareness event tomorrow evening from 7 to 8 at their headquarters on Maple Grove Road to do just that.

Regional Police say they have seen an increase of 4 times as much counterfeit currency just compared to last year.

Detective David Lea with Regional Police says store owners should be on alert for fraudsters trying to pass off bogus bills.

“With counterfeit money, they are going to do a number of different things, but most importantly they are going to try to hide this money with genuine bills, or they are going to try to distract the employee until they can get out of the store.”

Lea says there is a number of things anyone behind the counter should look out for this holiday season.

Adding the most important thing to do is to really feel the texture of the bill.

“Really feel the bill, you know what the bill is supposed to feel like. Just take a quick look at it, if something feels off, explain that to the customer. If it is genuine money, they are going to stick around and wait. If the money is counterfeit, they are going to try to get out of their as quickly as possible.”
