Best players falter for Rangers… again

By Chris Pope

For the second time in three games, the message has been the same from Jay McKee.

“I don’t think our best players were our best players,” said the Kitchener Rangers head coach.

“We had two stick infractions by one, a turnover that led to their second goal, we had one of our top players leave his D man on their game winning goal,” McKee added after the Owen Sound Attack slapped the Rangers 5-2 Friday night at the Aud. “It’s frustrating. It has to come within our players; the determination and execution has to be better.”

Sean Durzi led the way offensively for Owen Sound with two goals and an assist. Aidan Dudas added in two markers, while going 10-for-16 in the faceoff circle.

Rangers goalie Luke Richardson made 38 saves on 43 shots, but picked up his sixth loss in just seven starts. In those starts, the Rangers’ offence has only provided him with 2.5 goals per game. Chris McGonigle made his debut this season in the Rangers lineup, but stayed on the bench in a back-up role.

The Attack have tripped the Rangers in two-of-three meetings this season; all at the Aud.

“We have a good hockey team, but we have a couple guys right now who have the mindset they can just show up and win,” said McKee. “We’re not elite. We have some guys who can score goals and we have good depth, but we have to show up and have every guy going.”

Kitchener tries to snap their three-game losing streak Sunday afternoon, when they host the North Bay Battalion.
