UpTown Waterloo businesses vote in favour of completing road work, despite suffering sales

More than half of business and property owners in UpTown Waterloo want to see the King Street improvement project put on the fast track.

The UpTown Waterloo BIA recently asked its membership if they want construction to continue through 2018, or put on hold in light of concerns that area businesses may not be able to survive any more delays.

While 54 per cent voted in favour of getting it done, Executive Director Patti Brooks says their support of the project comes with conditions. She says their asking the Region for a seat at the table at key meetings, and a review of the tender contract before it’s sent out for RFP on the next three construction projects.

“We would just like to see some better communication and some better transparency with the project,” Brooks says. “Not to mention accelerating the project. It’s a little behind schedule and we would like to see it … meet the timelines that were suggested to us at the very beginning of this.”

Brooks says they’ll also be urging the Region to extend construction hours on weekends and evenings to speed up the road work, and for Erb Street to run two-way while Bridgeport is closed.

“It was made very clear by our Board that we need to take some action as an association and advocate on behalf of our membership,” she says, “that we need this project done. Done properly and expedited.”
