The 2017 Battle of Waterloo in OUA football was living up to the hype, until just before halftime.
With no time left on the clock in the second quarter, receiver Kurleigh Gittens Jr. would return a punt for 65 yards to put Laurier ahead of the University of Waterloo 35-15 at Warrior Field.
Had the Warriors been able to stop the run, the deficit going into the locker room would have only been 11 points. The momentum seemed to be swinging Waterloo’s way, just before that return.
Gittens Jr. says all he was thinking about was the end zone, as soon as he got the ball in his hands – “The guys on the punt return team made perfect blocks and I just took it to the house.”
The Golden Hawks would add 38 more points in the second half for a 71-24 romp over the Warriors.
Laurier (4-0) will host Western next Saturday. The Mustangs are 4 and 0 heading into their game this evening.
The Warriors fall to 4 and 1 and will get a visit from Guelph next weekend.
Attendance for the Battle of Waterloo was just under 2,800.
Laurier has now beaten the Warriors 14 straight times.
