Police looking for suspects after shoplifter allegedly assaults officer in Kitchener

Regional Police are searching for two people after a female officer was assaulted during a shoplifting arrest.

Police say it happened at the Zehrs store on Ottawa Street South in Kitchener around 1:40 p.m on Thursday.

Inspector Mike Haffner says a female officer approached a man and a woman, and when she tried to arrest the man, a scuffle broke out.

Haffner says the man was able to get away and run to a grey 2005 4-door Nissan in the parking lot, where the woman accomplice was standing.

“The officer proceeds to that vehicle and attempts to arrest the female this time, and in the process of arresting her, she is jumped on [from behind] by the male, and the fight is on. Our female officer sustained some injuries that required medical attention.”

Haffner says the man and woman were able to get away in the car, which police believe is stolen.

The Ontario licence plate on the vehicle is CAA H796.
