Strike at CAMI plant enters day 2

By The Canadian Press

Unifor’s president says G-M Canada’s CAMI plant in Ingersoll is a “poster child” for what’s wrong with NAFTA.

Jerry Dias says G-M shifted production from one of the most productive plants in the world to Mexico, where it pays workers two bucks an hour.

Twenty-five-hundred unionized workers at the CAMI plant walked off the job on Sunday night as negotiators failed to reach agreements on plant operations, economic issues and job security.

Dias says any trade negotiations must address the low wages for workers in Mexico, where automakers have opened eight assembly plants after closing four in Canada and 10 in the U-S.
