Former Cambridge Mayor Jane Brewer has died

Former Cambridge mayor Jane Brewer has passed away at the age of 93.

Brewer was the city’s mayor from 1988 to 2000, and spent 36 years in municipal politics, where she was also a regional councillor.

Cambridge’s current mayor Doug Craig tells 570 NEWS, that Brewer’s legacy is one of compassion and caring for her community. “She was at everything. Events, you name it. She was a very popular person, and anyone could go up and talk to her. She cared about what people had to say, and when she had to make a tough decision, she weighed all options and listened to all sides.”

Craig adds that Brewer was a shining light in Cambridge’s dark days. “Her politics, the way she dealt with certain things. I think when we were dealing with transit issues and economic growth back then, she was the right mayor at the right time.”

If there was one word Craig would describe Brewer as, it was tough.

A book of condolence is available at City Hall for staff and public to express their condolences.
