Man arrested after barricade incident in downtown Guelph

A 30-year-old Guelph man was arrested after a standoff with police that lasted for six hours.

Just before 5 a.m., Guelph police responded to a noise complaint call on Yarmouth Street.

Constable Buzz Dean says the call turned out to be a domestic dispute situation between a man and a woman.

Dean says the man allegedly brandished a knife initially and retreated into his apartment.

“At that point it become a barricaded person,” he says, “and because of that, protocols indicated that Tactical Unit were called out and negotiators.”

The man surrendered himself to police before noon, uninjured.

Dean adds the female victim did receive minor injuries from the dispute, but she got out of the residence before the standoff started.

The accused is being charged with assault and overcoming resistance in the commission of the offence.

He will appear in bail court Friday morning.

Yarmouth Street re-opened shortly after the incident cleared.
