ALBANY, N.Y. – New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s plan to install high-tech LED lights on New York City’s bridges is being criticized by officials who question whether the investment is the best use of public money.
Republican lawmakers and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio say the money should go toward fixing the city’s troubled subways. Government watchdog group Common Cause wants an investigation into what it says are conflicting explanations for how much the lights will cost and where that money will come from.
Cuomo says the lights will delight tourists and predicts they will ultimately save money because they’re more efficient than traditional lights. Officials now say estimates that the lights could cost more than $200 million are likely exaggerated.
